BAHATI Vanessa

IMPROVING THE LIVES OF CHILDREN WITH VISUAL IMPAIRMENT

My name is BAHATI Vanessa, 34 years-old married woman with 6 children. My country of origin is Rwanda. That is basically where my family lives, plus the Foundation that I am going to tell you about operates.

In 2015 I was blessed with my 3rd born son, I was excited to receive an additional of blessing in our family, and my doctor scheduled a C-section. That Morning, I gave birth to a beautiful son. I had no idea that He would be blind, with no eyes until later in the evening when the doctors came in to break that news to me. Very shocking and devastating news to me as you could imagine I cried unstoppable, I had an uncured headache, and I was too low and down.

I could not imagine the future of my son with eyesight I left the hospital after 2 days, but I couldn’t just leave things as they were, I had no other choice I have started to run left-right, country by country, continent by continent to see if there was nothing left that could be done in my son’s case I had a lot of thoughts, I wanted to know if apart from being blind, the rest of his body was in normal condition as well. I traveled the whole of Europe, I went to India, and the result was the same.

“To love and Take care of him was the only option left to me”

While in India I started thinking out loud about where will my son study, and what his future would be like. I started doing research and the result was shocking: There is no school for blind children in my country. It was an overwhelming situation for me, then I started asking myself: “What is the situation like for other blind children in my country? In a country with the majority of the population not rich, how do other blind children and their parents overcome such a situation?”

When I returned back home from India, I started tours and tours across my country and gathering information on the lives of other blind children.

“That is where I came up with the idea of starting a foundation that can help my son and other blind children”

At the end of 2015, I started the JORDAN FOUNDATION. The name of the foundation came from a great mark of one of the names of my Blind Son “Jordan”. Generally, the large number of blind children in my country are coming from marginalized communities, rural societies, and poor families. Most of the families are even struggling to eat, and most of those blind children are suffering from malnutrition diseases and other related diseases. The cost of medical eye treatment is over-priced because of a lack of medical infrastructure. This results sometimes in addingmeye infection problem. For now, my foundation took in children from poor families and cared for them. We try to get them medical care and feed them to defeat malnutrition diseases. Even if we operate as for now, it is not easy usually but with the small help we get from some groups of people who help and support us we kept moving forward

Now we have 120 children that we fully take care of at our foundation. Additionally, we help their families start small farming projects so they can fight malnutrition in families, We buy for them medical insurances, and we try to empower them in the best possible ways. Today, the demand for children wanting to join us is way bigger and we can’t accommodate them anymore because our space is so limited. For now, we have ongoing construction projects going forward We need a more prominent center as we wish to accommodate the large number of blind children. We are praying so much that in the near future, God will help us to accommodate 400 blind children selected from poor families in all corners of the country. When I say poor families, I mean the ones in the 4th category that do not even spend 1 USD/Day on their daily basic needs. As for now, our project construction is designed in a way that the Jordan Foundation will have Schools, Dormitories that accommodate 400 blind children, a modern kitchen, and a refectory. Additionally, there will be a renouvellation of offices and children’s playgrounds. Now, in the Father Lord, His Beloved Son Jesus Christ, the Holy Mary, and in Saint Trinity, I am calling out your moral support. Bring this initiative into your daily prayers, Let’s save some blind children Join me, help me to put some smiles on their faces, support them, and build a faith of life in them. They need us. Discrimination is too much around them but ONLY YOU & ME can change something in their life. Back in my country, some blind children are hidden in their houses, their parents are privatizing their rights. A lot of awareness is needed. Some mothers decide to kill them after realizing that they are blind. Let us keep fighting these ideologies

We can’t give them sight but we can give them hope for their future by holding their hands and showing them that we can beat the weakness of their disabilities by loving them.

Children's Testimonies

One of the other boys, Jean Claude (4) wasn’t born blind  either but suffered a  series of eye infections when he was  two years old. The doctors decided to enucleate his eyes in order to save his life and he was brought into the care of the Jordan Foundation.

He speaks a little bit of English now and when asked if he minds having his picture taken, he straightens up as if in military position and yells: Cheeeeeese! He is a happy, sociable young boy who likes English songs and music. It is heart-breaking to think what life would have been like for him, and his 51 friends, without the efforts of Vanessa
Bahati.

Bizimana Jean Luc and Mushimiyimana Jean Luc are handsome twins of 5years old.
Currently living and studying at Jordan Foundation since 2015. These handsome boys were born totally blind. After their parents find out that their little twins were blind, their father suggested that they kill both of them since raising blind children were for no use and has no meaning at al. Luckily twin’s mother did not agree with her husband and she refused the plan.
Immediately after she refused, her husband decided to abandon them, he couldn’t stand on living with blind children in his own home since he believed that it was nothing but bad luck. According to twin’s mother, life did get harder. It wasn’t easy to take care of 2 children who need special care and take care of households in general at the same time.
Things got worst and the children started suffering of malnutrition and other diseases until one faithfully day Mrs BAHATI Vanessa showed up in thier lives and changed it completely. She offered to fully care for the children and give them decent home every child truly deserve. She took care of them since 2015 and now the twins are happy kids.

They have access to education, health care and everything that children need to
grow up and became better citizen. The mother and twins as well are forever
greatfull to Mrs Vanessa for showing them right path and brighter future ahead of them.
